Program-Based Integration Strategy
A program approach with Brake® delivers cleaner fields, fewer escapes, and stronger stands—protecting seed purity, managing resistance, with safe, reliable control.
Fall PRE Use in Carbon-Seeded Perennial Ryegrass and Tall Fescue
- Brake® + Zidua®: Strong foundational control of annual grasses and small-seeded broadleaves.
- Brake® + Fierce®: Broader-spectrum, long-term residual annual grass and small-seeded broadleaf control.
- Apply before fall irrigation or forecasted rain, ensuring 0.5” activation, ideally in the first 7 days after application.
Sequential or Split Applications in Established Perennial Ryegrass, Tall Fescue, Fine Fescue, and Orchardgrass
- Apply fall PRE (e.g. Axiom® or Fierce®), then follow with Brake® + POST (e.g. oxyfiuorfen) in Dec. – Jan.
- Program approach will help delay or eliminate the need for POST rescue sprays in the spring, saving on trips and labor.
Rotation Partner
- Especially useful in fields with known resistance or heavy weed pressure (e.g. Poa annua).
- Do not use Brake® as a standalone residual herbicide in the same field more than two consecutive years.
- Brake® tank-mixed with other residual herbicides will reduce the resistance potential.

Practice | Why It Matters? |
---|---|
Activating Rainfall/Irrigation | Brake® needs 0.5” of rainfall or irrigation in the first 7 days after application to activate. Consistent rainfall or irrigation to keep the soil moist will extend the longevity of residual control. |
Tank-Mixing with Other Residual Herbicides | Brake® is compatible with other herbicides labeled for grass seed crops. Tank-mixing Brake® with other residual herbicides has been proven to broaden weed spectrum and extend the longevity of residual control during dry periods. |
Use a Herbicide Program | Brake® herbicide programs that contain overlapping residuals will provide the most consistent control of annual grasses and small-seeded broadleaves. |
Tank-mix Smart | Pair with another PRE for broad-spectrum residual control. |
Follow Label | Apply Brake® when grass is dormant or semi-dormant. Applications after March 1st may result in minor injury. |
Don’t Use as a Standalone Residual | Do not apply Brake® alone to the same field more than two years in a row. Brake® tank-mixes can be applied for more than two years in a row. |
