Broad spectrum, long-lasting residual

A new mode-of-action to protect your grass seed.

A program-based approach is the best way to manage resistance and maintain clean fields all season.
Product Overview
  • A unique HRAC/WSSA Group 12 mode of action
  • Proven safe on carbon-seeded, spring-planted, and established tall fescue, fine fescue, orchardgrass, and perennial ryegrass
  • Protects seed purity and reduces need for rescue sprays
  • Controls resistant Italian ryegrass, and annual bluegrass, roughstalk bluegrass, and rattail fescue
  • Flexible program timing and tank-mix compatibility
  • Extended application window up to March 1st
  • No herbicide residue even at 4X rates

Program-Based Integration Strategy

A program approach with Brake® delivers cleaner fields, fewer escapes, and stronger stands—protecting seed purity, managing resistance, with safe, reliable control.

Fall PRE Use in Carbon-Seeded Perennial Ryegrass and Tall Fescue
  • Brake® + Zidua®: Strong foundational control of annual grasses and small-seeded broadleaves.
  • Brake® + Fierce®: Broader-spectrum, long-term residual annual grass and small-seeded broadleaf control.
  • Apply before fall irrigation or forecasted rain, ensuring 0.5” activation, ideally in the first 7 days after application.
Sequential or Split Applications in Established Perennial Ryegrass, Tall Fescue, Fine Fescue, and Orchardgrass
  • Apply fall PRE (e.g. Axiom® or Fierce®), then follow with Brake® + POST (e.g. oxyfiuorfen) in Dec. – Jan.
  • Program approach will help delay or eliminate the need for POST rescue sprays in the spring, saving on trips and labor.
Rotation Partner
  • Especially useful in fields with known resistance or heavy weed pressure (e.g. Poa annua).
  • Do not use Brake® as a standalone residual herbicide in the same field more than two consecutive years.
  • Brake® tank-mixed with other residual herbicides will reduce the resistance potential.

Maximize Brake Performance
Application Windows
  • Carbon-Seeded: Apply after seeding but prior to emergence
  • Spring-Planted: Apply as a fall PRE or during winter as an overlapping residual
  • Established: Apply as a fall PRE or during winter as an overlapping residual
Suggested Brake Rate
  • 32 fl oz/acre is the recommended starting rate
  • Extend the longevity of fall PRE applications by tank-mixing with another residual(s) (e.g. Zidua®)
Spray Tips
  • Brake® does not have postemergence activity. If weeds have germinated prior to application, tank-mix Brake® with a POST herbicide that is effective at controlling the target weed species and labeled for the intended use.
  • Do not apply more than 43 fl oz Brake® in a single application
  • Do not apply more than 43 fl oz Brake® in a single crop year (harvest to harvest)
  • Do not mix with drift agents containing polyacrylamide
Irrigation or Rainfall Activation
(within 7 days of application)
  • 0.5” irrigation or rainfall
  • More is better — Brake® is stable on soil surface and not degraded by sunlight
  • Brake® does not leach and performs better in moist soil conditions
Following Brake Applications
  • Brake® begins working preemergence to control weed flushes
  • Germinating weed seedlings will bleach and die with effective activation
  • Applying a winter overlapping residual following fall applied Brake® OR using Brake® as a winter overlapping residual will reduce the need for POST rescue sprays
Practice Why It Matters?
Activating Rainfall/Irrigation Brake® needs 0.5” of rainfall or irrigation in the first 7 days after application to activate. Consistent rainfall or irrigation to keep the soil moist will extend the longevity of residual control.
Tank-Mixing with Other Residual Herbicides Brake® is compatible with other herbicides labeled for grass seed crops. Tank-mixing Brake® with other residual herbicides has been proven to broaden weed spectrum and extend the longevity of residual control during dry periods.
Use a Herbicide Program Brake® herbicide programs that contain overlapping residuals will provide the most consistent control of annual grasses and small-seeded broadleaves.
Tank-mix Smart Pair with another PRE for broad-spectrum residual control.
Follow Label Apply Brake® when grass is dormant or semi-dormant. Applications after March 1st may result in minor injury.
Don’t Use as a Standalone Residual Do not apply Brake® alone to the same field more than two years in a row. Brake® tank-mixes can be applied for more than two years in a row.
